A HISTORY RICH IN MEMORY & TRADITION

9/29/1991 Greystone Golf & Country Club Founded by Daniel Corporation

On September 29, 1991, the first tee shots were played at Greystone. The membership was made up of 150 Charter Members and the course was set for the Club.

1992 The Club's First Tournament is Held

In 1992, George Archer won the inaugural playing of the Bruno's Memorial Classic (later renamed the Regions Charity Classic), named by Sports Illustrated as the #1 stop and the best-run tournament on the Champions Tour.

Since the tournament became Regions Tradition in 2011, the event has raised over $4.5 million for area charities and more than $16 million since the tournament's inception in 1992. Children's of Alabama serves as the primary beneficiary of the tournament.

1998 Discussions about a second course begin

By 1998, our membership was growing – and so were we. The Club was quickly approaching 600 equity members, the development was nearing capacity, and rumors were running hot about a "Second 18 Holes" at Greystone. In October, the membership approved a proposal to build a second course and hired Rees Jones to design our second Championship course.

2000 The Legacy Course is Born

Exactly nine years after the first tee shot was played at the Founders Course, Rees Jones would hit the first tee shot at the brand-new Legacy Course. On September 29, 2000, Greystone Golf & Country Club became the first and only 36-hole equity club in the state of Alabama. Two months later, the Legacy Clubhouse would open to the same rave reviews.

2001 Swim & Tennis Join Greystone's Amenities

The new Champions Pool opened to the membership on Saturday, May 26, 2001. The tennis facility also hosted its grand opening that same month.

2008 Greystone Member Steve Lowery Wins Pebble Beach

The Club welcomed a champion when Greystone Member Steve Lowery won Pebble Beach.

The same year, the Greystone Gators Swim Team won the 2008 Divisional Champions.

2009 Greystone Becomes a Member-Owned Club

Greystone moves forward as a member-owned club after purchasing from Daniel Corporation in July 2009.

Travel & Leisure Golf lists Greystone Golf & Country Club among the Top 100 U.S. Golf Communities.

2011 Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence

The Grand Opening of the TaylorMade Performance Lab at Greystone brings critical acclaim and world-class golfers to the Stone. The Facilities Master Plan is created as the wheels move forward with future plans for improvement and expansion to the Club. In September 2011, the 20th Anniversary of the Club is celebrated.

2012 Two Tennis Hard Courts & Walking Path Added

In the summer of 2011, the Swim, Tennis & Fitness Committee led the tennis advocates of Greystone in a fundraiser for two additional hard courts to the Tennis Complex. Through the tremendous support of the membership, the project was completed in late 2012 and a walking path was paved surrounded by beautiful landscaping leading to the Founders Clubhouse patio. A celebratory ceremony was held to unveil the two new courts and walking path and the lasting tributes of bricks and pavers displaying the names of Greystone's honorary families.

2013 The SEC Women's Championship Comes to Greystone

Greystone welcomes golf fans from the SEC region by with the SEC Women's Golf Championship from April 2013 through 2016. The Founders Course hosted the event in 2013 & 2014. We are excited to share in the history of this prestigious event and for the chance to witness each year as the tournament brings forth its well-deserving champion.

2013 Founders Patio, Interior Remodel & Men's Lounge Addition

The Facilities Master Plan brought forth three exciting additions and a facelift to the Founders Clubhouse. First, the patio located at the rear of the clubhouse overlooking signature hole 18. The multi-use patio is for the enjoyment of Members and their guests, brides and grooms, their families and friends, and tournament players and spectators. The second project created a tasteful modernization and enhanced the Founders Clubhouse foyer, restrooms, Main Dining Room and Trophy Room. Third, KFP Inc. Construction worked diligently to renovate the Founders Men's Locker Room and create a men's lounge with televisions and pub style tables.

2014 Greystone Golf & Country Club Becomes the Home of the Regions Tradition

The Champions Tour returned to the Founders Course in 2016 with plans to host through 2023. The return of the Regions Tradition combined with our Strategic Plan to become a Club of Excellence inspired membership to approve funding for three building projects to enhance and benefit the Club long-term:

  1. The addition of a Golf Operations Center & Plaza at Founders.
  2. The renovation of the Lower Level of the Founders Clubhouse adding a state-of-the-art 24/7 Fitness Center, contemporary kitchen and bar area, a modernized Women's Locker Room, and more.
  3. The addition of a Golf Performance Center at Legacy.

The projects began in spring 2014 and concluded in spring 2016. In addition to these three projects, the Founders Course received modifications by the Champions Tour.

2014 & 2015 Gators Swim Team Celebrates Two Undefeated Seasons

The Gators finished undefeated two seasons in a row! In addition to the friendly weeknight meets, the Gators enjoy weekday practice and socials including bowling, skating and a trip to the movies. The end-of-summer award banquet is held to celebrate the swimmers' accomplishments.

2015 The Greystone Golf Performance Center Opens

Following funding approval from membership, the Greystone Golf Performance Center (GPS) officially opens to the Greystone community, signaling a significant growth in our golf instruction capabilities.

The state-of-the-art golf learning center delivers player development, teaching and coaching solutions to members and guests. Our golf instruction team is led by renowned PGA instructor Mark Blackburn and the Blackburn Golf Academy.

2015 Fitness Center with 24/7 Access Opens at Founders

The 4,000-square-foot Fitness Center opened in September 2015. The center offers a wide variety of innovative equipment, personal & group training, large group classroom and massage therapy to help members stay active all day.

2016 Cellar 91 Opens at Greystone

April marked the grand opening of Cellar 91, a brand-new 5,500-square-foot restaurant and bar serving contemporary country club cuisine Tuesday through Sunday. Signature flatbread pizzas, specialty burgers and fresh catch creations are just a few of the featured menu items.

2016 Bernhard Langer Marks 100th Victory at Greystone

German professional golfer and two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer ran away with the Regions Tradition for his sixth senior major and 27th PGA Tour Champions title. He called it his 100th victory as a professional, saying that "to do it in a major means even more.''

2017 Langer Does it Again

Fred Funk and Bernhard Langer were tied for the lead at 16-under entering the back nine of the final round of the Regions Tradition on Sunday, May 21, 2017. Langer won to secure his eighth career senior major title.

2018 Miguel Angel Jimenez Unseats Champ with First Champions Win at the Regions Tradition

Jimenez won the Regions Tradition for his first PGA Tour Champions major title, closing with a 2-under 70 for a three-stroke victory. He celebrated with a big embrace from two-time Masters winner Jose Maria Olazabal.

Jimenez held or shared the lead after every round, taking a three-shot edge into the final round at Greystone Golf & Country Club. The Spaniard finished at 19-under 269 for his fifth PGA Tour Champions victory.

2019 Steve Stricker Wins Regions Tradition for First Major Championship

Stricker couldn't have asked for a better week at the 2019 Regions Tradition, as he claimed his first major championship on Monday, May 13th.

Stricker shot rounds of 68, 64 and 70. Coming into the final day of the tournament, Stricker led by two shots at 14 under in front of two-time Regions Tradition Champion Bernhard Langer as well as David Toms and Bill Andrade.

2020 Amici Ristorante + Bar and a New Café Join Dining Amenities

In January of 2020 at the Legacy Clubhouse, Greystone opened Amici, an all-Italian restaurant and bar featuring bi-weekly menus, Italian wines, and cocktails. This fine dining venue is the perfect place to enjoy a romantic dinner or an upscale evening with friends.

Additionally, the Founders Café opened in March of 2020. It offers many hot and cold beverages, plus breakfast and lunch snacks. Open daily, the Café is a place for members to grab a quick cup of joe or a casual place to catch up with friends.
